Dark-stained pivot door and bi-folding window for a Hackney architect’s own home
In the heart of Hackney’s Ridley Road, a compact Victorian flat has been carefully reconfigured into a functional, design-led home by the architect who lives there. Known as Plaster House, the renovation transformed a one-bedroom property into a two-bedroom space with an open-plan living area that connects directly to a landscaped garden.
As part of the project, Sashed was commissioned by Sonn Studio to manufacture and install two key rear joinery elements: a dark-stained Meranti pivot door and a matching bi-folding window. These bespoke features now define the rear of the property, providing generous natural light and an elegant connection between inside and out.
Pivot door with precise architectural alignment
The full-height pivot door was crafted from Meranti hardwood, selected for its clean, consistent grain. Stained in a rich, dark finish, it complements the kitchen cabinetry and custom furniture within the space.
One of the most considered details of the project was the placement of the pivot hinge: when the door opens, it aligns exactly with the internal border tiles. This subtle but deliberate move reflects the precision of the design.
Bi-folding window to maximise light and airflow
Adjacent to the pivot door, the dark-stained Meranti bi-folding window provides a generous opening between the kitchen and the garden. Built to match the door in finish and profile, the window enhances airflow and daylight, creating a seamless relationship between the interior and outdoor space.
Together, the pivot door and bi-folding window enable a practical yet beautifully executed transition from the home’s sculpted interior to its secluded garden.
Refined details for a cohesive material palette

- Ironmongery: Minimal matt black fittings for a contemporary finish
These elements were designed to blend beautifully into the wider architecture, where natural materials and a restrained palette define the space’s character.
