Windows and doors for a reimagined 17th-century inn in Henley-on-Thames
Once a 17th-century public house, this Grade II-listed building in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshir has been sensitively converted into a unique and characterful home by Connected Architecture. Known as The Beehive, the property seamlessly blends centuries-old charm with a warm, contemporary spirit – a home brought to life for a couple embarking on a new chapter together.
Sashed was appointed to manufacture and install all new windows and doors as part of the renovation, except the original front door, which was retained and Sashed, lovingly restored.
Craftsmanship rooted in heritage
A total of 26 timber windows were manufactured and fitted by Sashed, all crafted from Meranti hardwood and designed to remain faithful to the historic character of the property. This included:
- Traditional heritage casement windows, each fitted with butt hinges to match the original detailing.
- A selection of bespoke doors, including:
- A stable door
- A bi-folding door
- A single rear entrance door
- And a set of open-out French doors
Externally, all joinery was finished in Farrow & Ball Card Room Green (No. 79), a subtle, timeless colour that complements the building’s brick and timber façade. Internally, the finish is Farrow & Ball Pointing (No. 2003), offering warmth and softness against the period interiors.
Etched glass with a nod to history
In a thoughtful gesture to the building’s heritage, several of the windows feature etched bee and hive motifs. This discreet but meaningful detail references the building’s former life as a pub. This bespoke glazing not only adds charm but also personalises the home with a story that connects past and present.
Distinctive details and expert finishing
- Timber: All joinery made from Meranti, chosen for its durability and fine grain.
- Ironmongery: All black fittings supplied by From The Anvil, featuring classic monkey tail handles that blend seamlessly with the heritage styling.
- Glazing: Traditional single and double-glazed units to suit the character and energy requirements of each room.
